Once in a while you come across a garage sale that makes you say, "Yes! This is exactly why I venture out of the house so early on Saturday mornings!" We found one of those today. Tiny house, lovely East side Costa Mesa neighborhood, and a driveway full of treasure boxes. I mean...the Barbies alone were like a trip to a museum. There were Barbie ornaments, Barbie books, Barbie accessories, Barbie clothes and Barbie cases. None of these Barbies came home with either of us, but I was tempted! I could play with Barbies for days when I was a kid!<br />

I can't resist books from <a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/knopf/classics/">Everyman's Library.</a> Something about them just appeals to me: the feel of the pages and the beautiful, classic bindings. I found two of those today. One of these books is full of beautiful little sketches from the south of France. Here's a Willa Cather I've never heard of, and <i>Stiff </i>by Mary Roach, a book my brother raves about with the awesome subtitle <i>The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. </i>Carol was very patient with me while I dug through boxes. I ended up with thirteen books and an old volume of Boogie Woogie for piano for a grand total of $10. Ten dollars! The Tim Burton is a catalog of <a href="http://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/313?locale=en">his recent show at MOMA</a> that was worth twice that and was still wrapped up in plastic! But the<span style="font-family: inherit;"> piece de resistance</span>, the creme de la creme was Julia Child's <i>Mastering the Art of French Cooking,</i> the 40th anniversary edition. It is in <i>perfect </i>condition. No bernaise sauce has ever splattered a single pristine page. Retail price on the inside cover: $40. <br />

Amazing bargains! On another driveway I picked up a lovely picture frame (that I came home and filled with a recent painting just for effect) and Linda Ronstadt's <i>Heart Like a Wheel</i> for $1. That's $1 for <i>both. </i>And yes, I have a turntable to play it on. See?<br />

I don't know what you're doing with your Saturday, but I'm gonna go cook something while I listen to Linda. Garage Sailinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13704965611774307215noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586100350236217689.post-40946763052706641042016-06-22T09:21:00.000-07:002016-06-22T09:21:57.083-07:00"Maybe It Will Be An Art Project" and Other Justifications For Buying Things I Don't NeedI used to check the <a href="https://www.pennysaverusa.com/classifieds/usa/california/index.html">PennySaver</a> (remember that?) early in the week to plan my Saturday morning saling route. On Fridays I'd check the local classifieds and there would often be a long column of possibilities under "Garage Sales". Highlighter in hand, I'd mark the ones that looked promising and keep the list in my car.
Now it's 2016 and there is no Penny Saver or classifieds for that matter! I guess you can do the same thing online, but I never do. I just venture out into the neighborhood to see what's happening.
If I'm not dressed and in my car by 7:45 am I might as well just go back to bed. Carol & I are usually out the door by 7:30. (Even then we often find that some local driveways are already decimated.) The only exception to the 7:45 rule is for Estate Sales. In my neighborhood, true estate sales (there are fake ones, of course) start on Thursday or Friday and end on Saturday or Sunday. <i> Any time</i> on the first day of an actual estate sale can be lucrative. Most of the time I just scope them out to see if there's anything to come back for on half-price Saturday. So...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGGJODxAnUXu_-ZapEv_nssI6HDvbQGJfmnC_g3JJUDu3KjUsdQmHTJv5GszK2_ZcJTg86vCRoJhdvFX6TDlvkOID1vBSpUDvX3RfoG6SLXeEwoJpuitepv0I6UCDqU6gGI9L-2L06l0mn/s1600/IMG_5148.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGGJODxAnUXu_-ZapEv_nssI6HDvbQGJfmnC_g3JJUDu3KjUsdQmHTJv5GszK2_ZcJTg86vCRoJhdvFX6TDlvkOID1vBSpUDvX3RfoG6SLXeEwoJpuitepv0I6UCDqU6gGI9L-2L06l0mn/s320/IMG_5148.JPG" /></a></div>
This is a brand new 6-inch Mario Batali Dansk cast iron skillet in deep red. I knew it wouldn't be there for long, so I paid $10 for it on Thursday. <i>(And by the way, being able to go to estate sales on Thursdays is about #44 on the list of reasons-why-retirement-is-fantastic).</i> I thought that ten bucks was probably a little steep, but then I came home and googled it. No. These things are pricey. Also, hello. It is <i>adorable. </i><br />

<br />
This box came home with me, too. I paid $5 for this silly thing which was probably meant to hold CD's. It's from a company called <a href="https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=napa+valley+wooden+cassette+holder&tbm=shop">Napa Valley Box Company.</a> Evidently it has gone out of business, because when you google it, you get zillions of Ebay listings for waaaay more than $5! This is the second one I've picked up recently. The first one was bigger and spray painted bright orange and is currently being turned into an art piece. Eventually this one will follow suit. <br />
<br />
I also looked at this architectural print on Thursday, but decided that I didn't really need it or have wall space for it. Hahaha. When Carol and I came back on Saturday and everything was half price it came home with me anyway. (For $7.50) Carol found a pair of really excellent table lamps at the same sale, but no pictures of those I'm afraid. <br />
<br />
<br />
Other nice early Saturday morning finds include these three things that I absolutely have no need for but couldn't resist:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3v3xaVGkb_OHtRA_dPuXLg83Vo1JTM1NQAi1JULIKw6Wy9eoTFaccgcx9SMZzLG2x9xWkMAQwCOUELqAdlFNY3ZxOmxYNthlqEOVaTyORCVINMa5FODz-Zyk-Yo5DcKJhrILuHkxMrYrA/s1600/FullSizeRender%25283%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3v3xaVGkb_OHtRA_dPuXLg83Vo1JTM1NQAi1JULIKw6Wy9eoTFaccgcx9SMZzLG2x9xWkMAQwCOUELqAdlFNY3ZxOmxYNthlqEOVaTyORCVINMa5FODz-Zyk-Yo5DcKJhrILuHkxMrYrA/s320/FullSizeRender%25283%2529.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Another wind chime. I justify the purchase of so many of these by telling myself that they make good squirrel deterrents. I'm not sure that's really true, but since my dog has gone over my back wall not once, but <i>twice </i>in pursuit of squirrels I will try anything. And anyway, how can you not buy such a pretty wind chime for just $1? <br />
<br />
The old window came home just because I liked it. Shelling out $15 for an old window has to have some justification behind it, though, so here's how my thought process went:<br />
"I like this. It looks cool."<br />
"Yes, but what will you <i>do </i>with it?"<br />
"Maybe it could be an art project! Yeah, I think it could <i>definitely </i>be an art project!" <br />
And out comes my wallet.<br />
In reality, it turned out to be just another squirrel deterrent. It's currently hanging outside in one of Stella's prime squirrel attack spots. And it does look cool. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitLTBYpmv9n7y05kZX-cJdmIQpPnyp9mGkYjzifye56a_TKXvs3Pw_4obUtqsJK6qLEk86EWQSgIEkxnlltPlyLHpXsUs5ba4sjsNYiIVDWqFEnr9eCZrs-5TewgNr7NvkXZUJOGsadyTx/s1600/FullSizeRender%25284%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitLTBYpmv9n7y05kZX-cJdmIQpPnyp9mGkYjzifye56a_TKXvs3Pw_4obUtqsJK6qLEk86EWQSgIEkxnlltPlyLHpXsUs5ba4sjsNYiIVDWqFEnr9eCZrs-5TewgNr7NvkXZUJOGsadyTx/s400/FullSizeRender%25284%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Finally, a tiny little yellow teapot. It would make sense if I actually drank tea. But I'm a coffee person. I almost never drink tea. There is something about the shape and feel of these old teapots and pitchers that I just can't resist. This one is from the <a href="https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=napa+valley+wooden+cassette+holder&tbm=shop">Wallace China </a>company in Los Angeles and it's probably old. According to this California Pottery link it was in operation from 1931-1964. I could probably sell it, but I know me. I'll just keep it sitting around with all my other cool old pottery pitchers. Eventually, as my daughter Emily recently told me, "you'll be dead and we'll have to deal with all this shit." But it was only $1. How can you pass that up?Garage Sailinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13704965611774307215noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586100350236217689.post-47465162802764574992016-06-04T10:56:00.002-07:002016-06-04T10:56:51.313-07:00Small TreasuresCarol and I have not been out saling together for a long time. We are both in the midst of <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/12/marie-kondo-tidying_n_6841816.html">"kondoing" </a>our own garages. The last thing we need is more crapola. But...June is a nice time for garaging here in Newport. The mornings are gray and cool. The gardens are blooming and fun to look at. And you never know what you might find! So today we ventured out.<br />

You have to be selective: no plastic eyes or buttons or other chokable parts. I am constantly picking up toys and feeling them all over to assess. This Hello Kitty was perfect, and Stella goes through Frisbees like nobody's business, (and vice versa by the way) so here is a new stash. $2 for the pile.<br />

I don't really need these, but they were so cute! $1<br />
<br />
I was a little bit irritated about paying $4 for this really nice <a href="https://www.wallaroohats.com/products/catalina">Wallaroo </a>hat. But then I came home and googled it and found out that this exact hat costs $44 on their website. So...ok. <br />

<br />
This may not seem like much to you, but I have sort of a quasi-collection of two-headed objects. Most of them are clay figurines (like this one) from Mexico or Central America. This one has one head, but...<i>three views. </i>Very cool. But...the real reason that it came home with me was this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_btkModlZRHqqOMI6xt2-_Md8WY67GQ7cjMXI0pxSG02VhDn9VP9l13T_6ELT-n7-ZCTAHbQE_C_zyOIdyimnMEATfCRZvFtpt9tQAlxQMFtv4Plt9piP2lmx4fpGs3_kfWiANlN4wWJe/s1600/IMG_5057.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_btkModlZRHqqOMI6xt2-_Md8WY67GQ7cjMXI0pxSG02VhDn9VP9l13T_6ELT-n7-ZCTAHbQE_C_zyOIdyimnMEATfCRZvFtpt9tQAlxQMFtv4Plt9piP2lmx4fpGs3_kfWiANlN4wWJe/s400/IMG_5057.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
It's a little primitive Stella! I love it. And it was practically free: 50 cents!Garage Sailinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13704965611774307215noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586100350236217689.post-92047736486377026212016-04-16T11:23:00.001-07:002016-04-16T11:23:39.859-07:00$2 is the New QuarterIt's Saturday morning and I'm retired now. That means I have more time for pretty much <i>everything.</i> That includes blogging about garage sales! It's been so long since I've posted anything that I forgot how to do it. I had to retrain myself at every step. Here goes:<br />
<br />
It's warm and breezy today. Good weather usually makes for many garage sales. Today there <i>were </i>quite a few, but now that I don't have to buy things for my classroom I didn't really find much. Everything I picked up this morning cost $2. <i> Everything. </i>I've been doing this sailing thing for a really long time now and over the years the basic cost of certain items has gone up, kind of like the minimum wage. Things that used to cost a quarter or at the most, 50 cents, now cost $2. Two dollars is the new quarter.<br />
<br />
I don't need any of this stuff, but here are the four measly items I brought home today.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuPFYMD1t799qE5RUAPXKb0kxl28Bj6FW4SDswhviTtyRNaoEKITAr0DSZ2PcP4tB8stob7yJeF4qe608RKODCCWXGe3Nn-u6dMxuJFZI0a_fyXYRqwDLkVDzhh7II7PODSzkGAmDxn5JD/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuPFYMD1t799qE5RUAPXKb0kxl28Bj6FW4SDswhviTtyRNaoEKITAr0DSZ2PcP4tB8stob7yJeF4qe608RKODCCWXGe3Nn-u6dMxuJFZI0a_fyXYRqwDLkVDzhh7II7PODSzkGAmDxn5JD/s320/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />Two really beautiful cookbooks. The one on the left was just too gorgeous to leave behind. I might even use these. I mean, being retired I actually have time to shop for fresh vegetables at the weekly farmer's market and I'm learning to be a better (and healthier) cook. Usually I open an app. But occasionally I can go old school and open a book.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrfG6q0hR2m0jjj2LEQBpD6d4Y9poUqwhM9fYAP6MVLbTS66e4TqNUIqgnsGr1WcGL41e5I7LJEvVAWQRXmyJM1J8Qn8NoqLZyi_kJsAsDbT_ITqjTTtTZ2d5DNTX88Er1jZUZjO2q1bNP/s1600/IMG_4533.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrfG6q0hR2m0jjj2LEQBpD6d4Y9poUqwhM9fYAP6MVLbTS66e4TqNUIqgnsGr1WcGL41e5I7LJEvVAWQRXmyJM1J8Qn8NoqLZyi_kJsAsDbT_ITqjTTtTZ2d5DNTX88Er1jZUZjO2q1bNP/s320/IMG_4533.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
A very pretty serving bowl, just the right size for a pretty salad or some kind of delicious veggie dish made from one of these new cookbooks. It's "made in Italy" which is a plus. I've found many, many Italian pots, bowls, and platters over the years and they've always served me well. Those Italians. Classy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-t584gIL863qOh4h0puM_PaKSmN56KrSHDOs0DibJApsFKP9YpkDszI8t6dzjmcIsqP-XihMbrLlDsOKXrEuTm_5lBxvLwhyphenhyphenqDwt4hgTGKGgKJ3MlGK1VxwxOtnA1g3_GkI6Goq915-7-/s1600/IMG_4534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-t584gIL863qOh4h0puM_PaKSmN56KrSHDOs0DibJApsFKP9YpkDszI8t6dzjmcIsqP-XihMbrLlDsOKXrEuTm_5lBxvLwhyphenhyphenqDwt4hgTGKGgKJ3MlGK1VxwxOtnA1g3_GkI6Goq915-7-/s200/IMG_4534.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
I should really stop buying picture frames. I have so many of them. But this one is in perfect condition and I will probably use it. I've said this before but it bears repeating (seeing as how it's been years since I've posted anything): never pay real money for picture frames. <br />
<br />
Evidently all the quarters I've been saving are useless now. Unless I have them in stacks of eight.<br />

Life sort of got in the way of blogging a year ago. Now I find myself sitting around with time on my hands, surrounded by little goodies I picked up yesterday, and I've decided to try again.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Here goes!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0VCZhoO68yrBWvxA9pPvUtCS7nUdKaaMwV-rMmg8Dil9NRPRCqIJaCLsaDtO8DNrbsFIhvf5tJ_fZvC3V8pxzmoNSTrAQul2Fe1YpNX06hNSg9rRFlOvUyGuRH4gv6SUeEReTH8bdEv-E/s1600/IMG_0158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" mea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0VCZhoO68yrBWvxA9pPvUtCS7nUdKaaMwV-rMmg8Dil9NRPRCqIJaCLsaDtO8DNrbsFIhvf5tJ_fZvC3V8pxzmoNSTrAQul2Fe1YpNX06hNSg9rRFlOvUyGuRH4gv6SUeEReTH8bdEv-E/s320/IMG_0158.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This lovely purple bowl, which totally goes with some smaller ones I picked up more than a year ago, cost all of $2. <span style="font-family: Arial;">I had a cheesy little string of white lights hanging in my living room, leftovers from last Christmas. <em>Yesterday </em>they died. I asked the woman who was selling them, "Do they work?" and she said, "Yes, just not in my house." They work in mine! Again, $2.</span></div>

These two were in great shape: all zippers and handles in working order, no stains or smells or even any wear and tear! The Eddie Bauer duffle is a rolling one...very nice. Both bags: $20.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finally, the little tiny Oaxacan figures below were just (in the immortal words of Robert Palmer) completely irresistible. <br /><div>
<br /><div>
<br /><div>
<br /><div>
<br /><div>I don't have too much to share lately, so I'm combining a couple of weekends in this<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX7kO3rJjF5bC1N_MXEtckJhvNKqe5bMis5nsDDmpH4451GixsA7lE5Nis_WTHNzyAkOWZyxMNd7k_d1uQFktqEgvZkn8kvsyDiT9PwJN5DE4HwRodt76exfIOIMtoD1DhjRt1ABtA_8Hy/s1600/DSC06183.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648582434011801442" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX7kO3rJjF5bC1N_MXEtckJhvNKqe5bMis5nsDDmpH4451GixsA7lE5Nis_WTHNzyAkOWZyxMNd7k_d1uQFktqEgvZkn8kvsyDiT9PwJN5DE4HwRodt76exfIOIMtoD1DhjRt1ABtA_8Hy/s200/DSC06183.JPG" /></a> post. Last Saturday Carol & I had a very nice morning, but all I really had to show for my efforts were these fish plates. They are <em>excellent</em> fish plates, though. They were $2 each. I'm trying to decide whether to use them or hang them up. </div>
<br /><div></div>
<br />
<br /><div>Carol is out of town, so I was on my own yesterday. I found a beautiful jewelry box with lots of nice, movable compartments and not one, but two keys. At the same house I also got a brand new dark taupe bed skirt for my bed...no photo since that's really sort of boring. It's already on my bed, having replaced the lighter one with Roxanne residue all over it. Yeah...it needed replacing. </div>
<br /><div>Both the jewelry box and the bed skirt were $4. Nice. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHkufpSrjDGeRI5RsjxVBykgh_Pplnqka055kAvkxJ-xVgzSuZZeaPKY8CIQFUhJwC3YMm2LTVckAihegghMIqOFahl4Yygw2rY9TYMDuZN8Gn6a8y_Bu4ObXmYG39uZFCzdGcW9IZCGUu/s1600/DSC06176.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648582356476859010" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHkufpSrjDGeRI5RsjxVBykgh_Pplnqka055kAvkxJ-xVgzSuZZeaPKY8CIQFUhJwC3YMm2LTVckAihegghMIqOFahl4Yygw2rY9TYMDuZN8Gn6a8y_Bu4ObXmYG39uZFCzdGcW9IZCGUu/s200/DSC06176.JPG" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPrNTJWMkI3YdxudvpQlTQyOVjc2UniDTs5zMgntwSx7vRVRpVG9S2qP1K644N2L5iIHS5wyA7erP09LThSBGKePxfuxBB79UZddQQZG2eJ3SxDOOrQYOkfTeq52EFf7kREsWqFPPqc-Ju/s1600/DSC06174.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648582267505463250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPrNTJWMkI3YdxudvpQlTQyOVjc2UniDTs5zMgntwSx7vRVRpVG9S2qP1K644N2L5iIHS5wyA7erP09LThSBGKePxfuxBB79UZddQQZG2eJ3SxDOOrQYOkfTeq52EFf7kREsWqFPPqc-Ju/s200/DSC06174.JPG" /></a>
<br />
<br /><div></div>
<br /><div>Then I went and visited my jewelry-selling friend again. This time I stayed and chatted with her a while. Her name is Michelle. She's one of nine siblings who evidently live nearby. Between her and her brothers and sisters, they always have goodies to sell. Sometimes I <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc_ZeETSy1Y7IcWsKPU07qE-DTu7QoHTW9DUlH782FqfcVDZZHuoJ4LZ6Qmr66sok3Z8F2KSjsCqyL8tsuD326ZUYtbpfsZ8gcFf-7wTYN2bTk27DyRml8txLjYJozUYiBI4aYO1qUovU9/s1600/DSC06180.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648582174636871682" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc_ZeETSy1Y7IcWsKPU07qE-DTu7QoHTW9DUlH782FqfcVDZZHuoJ4LZ6Qmr66sok3Z8F2KSjsCqyL8tsuD326ZUYtbpfsZ8gcFf-7wTYN2bTk27DyRml8txLjYJozUYiBI4aYO1qUovU9/s200/DSC06180.JPG" /></a>see her out "sailing", too, and I'll say, "Hi! Look! I'm wearing your earrings!" Nice lady with <em>tons </em>of pretty jewelry. I bought these turquoise scarab, semi-Egyptian-looking things for $5 each. </div>
<br /><div>I like them!</div>
<br /><div></div>
<br /><div></div>
<br /><div>This last item isn't a sailing find, but it's so cute that I have to share it with somebody. School started on Thursday, September 1. I had 28 students on my roster, <em>29 </em>actually showed up, and by Friday I was up to 30. I have 15 boys and 15 girls: perfect. On Friday morning one of my new students walked in and handed me this little package, hand-colored and wrapped in the inimitable style of an 8-year-old girl. Inside: a pink, plastic Hello Kitty wallet. Priceless. The year is off to a pretty good start. </div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl-oNOC_OWC-qS-mztuLcu8lQZYqcD5Ndwvyl7WMvTrNTYNXMo-w5yTRsiiKelygt5zweU3jZ25Ggs6Pdt6p6TaOAETD9_1gFfpQU35mFWkeO0txnaztJM-nlrssgCg85Y5RX6cWcAofWH/s1600/DSC06186.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648581999113001090" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl-oNOC_OWC-qS-mztuLcu8lQZYqcD5Ndwvyl7WMvTrNTYNXMo-w5yTRsiiKelygt5zweU3jZ25Ggs6Pdt6p6TaOAETD9_1gFfpQU35mFWkeO0txnaztJM-nlrssgCg85Y5RX6cWcAofWH/s200/DSC06186.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC1gBIfMe7txzmAIKcc_K_qHKceWqoVMtN3qrD0n4goXWi4DEYZgOkffOoc785LlZ0sv8zEKBSv6eZY8_8cLUjPcD7DJq-OI3Gui0MMjxMc0BaSZedLQZ0r7NvvHg2hToqPIIqP0WE6Mpl/s1600/DSC06185.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648582086089740562" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC1gBIfMe7txzmAIKcc_K_qHKceWqoVMtN3qrD0n4goXWi4DEYZgOkffOoc785LlZ0sv8zEKBSv6eZY8_8cLUjPcD7DJq-OI3Gui0MMjxMc0BaSZedLQZ0r7NvvHg2hToqPIIqP0WE6Mpl/s200/DSC06185.JPG" /></a>

I haven't been anywhere near my classroom. I have been having too much fun gardening, reading, and drawing. Now I have to get serious about getting my room organized. I will be out there Monday, and these two bright little stools (purchased this morning) will be joining me. They will be perfect in my "library", which is built from funky little shelves that are very close to the ground. I always assign jobs in my classroom, and the "librarians" can use these when they reshelve my books. So cute! $3 each.

<br />I bought this little tank top with Emily in mind, but I <em>really </em>bought it because the tag was so cute. $1. Want it, Em?
<br />
<br />We visited the jewelry lady again today. Carol found a lovely bracelet for her sister, and I bought this one to go with the earrings I got <em>last </em>time I shopped there.
<br />The tag says $35, but I paid $10. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVYJl6cVsUzzQZLhGBNhYclhqMsJQkMLfISwI6rQWrwlT2oApLGKo96q5NmkVsnkQx05EUv3jzwGCNTt8j8xX2fLhk3DZfuTRZZI8eARgeRpEEW1xlvSzMk9taQRFGnQrFZceGCAZprYy-/s1600/DSC06132.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643007009943240194" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVYJl6cVsUzzQZLhGBNhYclhqMsJQkMLfISwI6rQWrwlT2oApLGKo96q5NmkVsnkQx05EUv3jzwGCNTt8j8xX2fLhk3DZfuTRZZI8eARgeRpEEW1xlvSzMk9taQRFGnQrFZceGCAZprYy-/s200/DSC06132.JPG" /></a>
<br />Very pretty.
<br />
<br />Another picture frame. Sometimes I think that the reason people are selling picture frames is that they can't get the TJMaxx tag off the glass! This one was brand new, marked $4.99, and I used a squirt of Goo Gone (if you teach little kids this is just something you know about) and voila! <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8xY482tpif7ho1C_cA5vKu2AHogO4j1OtUIhMWYM-s33z33euavtBoBREeJ1elK9aFIr0mMpvcf9ZoHvGZE5RCcMk7xmjj5vILfvGgBJbanPWPQl9hTBw-0PkGMCOBRMts_xbm8JsvozK/s1600/DSC06137.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643006907402243314" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8xY482tpif7ho1C_cA5vKu2AHogO4j1OtUIhMWYM-s33z33euavtBoBREeJ1elK9aFIr0mMpvcf9ZoHvGZE5RCcMk7xmjj5vILfvGgBJbanPWPQl9hTBw-0PkGMCOBRMts_xbm8JsvozK/s200/DSC06137.JPG" /></a>

Carol and I could <em>not</em> leave it behind.
<br />
<br />It might go in my classroom...but it <em>might </em>have to stay here with me.

<br /><div>
<br /><div>
<br /><div>
<br /><div>In a whirlwind 40-minute tour of the neighborhood this morning I managed to find several very nice little items. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4wajp6W9R2O3zoJlBEhYCPjNSvKbFGm3487MhgSOjogBjQb7Ogz6-WBpjTSSND8GyIzb05W7cc5RmJXLmPRmaOnZeR9PSTp3brdk0F2Jw_suHj2Ceh2NKy-aBFm3Bo0sPx-nty2F9H81S/s1600/DSC06127.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5640469834339298834" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4wajp6W9R2O3zoJlBEhYCPjNSvKbFGm3487MhgSOjogBjQb7Ogz6-WBpjTSSND8GyIzb05W7cc5RmJXLmPRmaOnZeR9PSTp3brdk0F2Jw_suHj2Ceh2NKy-aBFm3Bo0sPx-nty2F9H81S/s200/DSC06127.JPG" /></a></div>
<br /><div></div>
<br /><div>A plain, red quilt: queen size and in perfect condition. Very nice for a change in winter. Even if I decide it's not so good in our room, it will look pretty across the end of the bed in the black & white guest room. $10.</div>
<br />
<br /><div></div>
<br /><div>Three lovely blue glasses. I often find glasses or plates in groups of three. I think that's why people get rid of them (because there's not <em>four </em>anymore!) My dishes are all just a big mix of styles and colors, so it doesn't really matter. Plus, we break things a lot. All three glasses: $1.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUbzP1FQE09d-4hutwqo3lD8_yfhTSz-H57TxGn1cD250jkw-GF38M9fMTZ1D85GZys4h9tHDoLLAxaQ0MCz7W1NpS9L8tDzTBxs0b2SaCbZdv4HQloDsACtFn2IxvoZxe9Z7olHMVIo8_/s1600/DSC06116.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5640469706993294834" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUbzP1FQE09d-4hutwqo3lD8_yfhTSz-H57TxGn1cD250jkw-GF38M9fMTZ1D85GZys4h9tHDoLLAxaQ0MCz7W1NpS9L8tDzTBxs0b2SaCbZdv4HQloDsACtFn2IxvoZxe9Z7olHMVIo8_/s200/DSC06116.JPG" /></a></div>

<br /><div></div>
<br />
<br />
<br /><div>Three more books. (Look, Em: more George!) The woman who sold me these had lots of great books, but most of them were ones I already own. She sighed <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbK4cPh2lc0eFilbQ2AG1XuTsJDnqaqc4fzA5gy0-sFb7Jq4LlwlTh26EMMDeu5GlYWoPjDtrNPO7OzEeavkIFMNAs_JpOhKogqWQnd65cgc-Cqn-XRe4lhokRV5QGUDQyoIaupRe_PgIq/s1600/DSC06123.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5640469388166412386" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbK4cPh2lc0eFilbQ2AG1XuTsJDnqaqc4fzA5gy0-sFb7Jq4LlwlTh26EMMDeu5GlYWoPjDtrNPO7OzEeavkIFMNAs_JpOhKogqWQnd65cgc-Cqn-XRe4lhokRV5QGUDQyoIaupRe_PgIq/s200/DSC06123.JPG" /></a>when she sold me these and said, "Nobody reads books anymore." I do! I loved Edith Wharton's <em>The Age of Innocence,</em> so I'm looking forward to <em>Summer. The Phantom Tollbooth</em> is one that my girls loved when they were little, and this one is a great, illustrated, like-new edition. Three books: $1.50.</div>
<br /><div></div>
<br />
<br /><div>A beautiful little sterling silver and garnet bead necklace: $2.</div>
<br />
<br /><div></div>
<br /><div>And last, but not least, this wire gizmo. Every year at Christmas time I pore over t<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_bywnYGM3ST1rJCioJ-aCTjhfzWQ0BswIigHQMjJBWnNoLeAlnddlD81IoxNPvbHI7nxUvLImEXkWsscCEpB0AEqdzDcE_Pc8SGX8PtE6xa5nVKq4ASkL3kmIdK6YakSTlZnq2LQ_TfNd/s1600/DSC06122.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5640469217540186402" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_bywnYGM3ST1rJCioJ-aCTjhfzWQ0BswIigHQMjJBWnNoLeAlnddlD81IoxNPvbHI7nxUvLImEXkWsscCEpB0AEqdzDcE_Pc8SGX8PtE6xa5nVKq4ASkL3kmIdK6YakSTlZnq2LQ_TfNd/s200/DSC06122.JPG" /></a>hose fat Pottery Barn catalogs, not so much to actually buy anything, but just to see how they're decorating for the holidays. I've been tempted to buy their long, wire card-holder for a couple of seasons now, but I could never justify the $40 plus it would cost. Well, here it is! (Actually, here's one end of it...the entire thing is not quite five feet long.) I have lots of places in the living room where it might work. I think it actually looks sort of interesting even if I don't stick any photos or cards in it. </div>
<br /><div>The best part? One tenth the PB price: $4. </div>

It was a badly planned flight: leaving at 10:00 am on a Saturday morning, meaning she'd have to get to the airport early enough that any saling beforehand was out of the question.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />So I dropped her off at John Wayne and headed out on my own. My first stop turned up these cast iron A & Z hooks, complete with hardware. $2. Useful. And cute!<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCGHhZjaChWNv2stbP5gwVeXUjdXYp__DqTPDs1DAnn-in0I4qun6c8kg1MtXDXfejBYI5nsj2a-HzT2G0eTxtB18t7P3nuzUCbA-BfQVq7pAUnBPCcRQdVZgHUfvO3cO2V4NeINifkcrJ/s1600/DSC06106.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5637806802871563170" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCGHhZjaChWNv2stbP5gwVeXUjdXYp__DqTPDs1DAnn-in0I4qun6c8kg1MtXDXfejBYI5nsj2a-HzT2G0eTxtB18t7P3nuzUCbA-BfQVq7pAUnBPCcRQdVZgHUfvO3cO2V4NeINifkcrJ/s200/DSC06106.JPG" /></a><br />These next little items are definitely <em>not</em> for me. My daughter Sara has been creating interesting little nail "art" lately. These were a quarter a bag...so I bought her a couple bucks worth of goodies to play with.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The yellowish leather purse was $2. It had so many cute little zippers and pockets that I couldn't pass it up. Plus it fit over my shoulder like it had been there before...you know how that is. How can you resist? The red dish rack behind it was also $2. That one is for school in our teachers' "lounge". The word "lounge" is a tremendous misnomer here. For one thing, no one is ever "lounging" in there. No one would want to: it is pretty disgusting. The dish rack (which most people ignore, just leaving their dirty dishes in the sink...such pigs!) is old and nasty. Maybe this bright red one will get noticed and people will actually <em>use </em>it. But enough of this rant...<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />My last purchase was this lovely crock. This garage sale had quite an interesting array of items, including a pretty nice leather sofa, some antique tools, & some "vintage" patio furniture. There were two fairly large boxes full of rubber stamps, which I always check out for use at school. And then there were the crocks. This one was the prettiest, but it didn't have a price tag. As soon as I asked about it I knew I was in trouble. The woman said, "That is a lovely (yes...I see that it's "lovely" or I wouldn't have asked) <em>French (</em>uh oh) piece of crockery. It's about (about??) twenty dollars." So I said, "OK. Will you throw in these two rubber stamps with it?" That threw her for a loop. She said, "Oh. I don't know. Just a minute." She goes over to her friend, and they <em>whisper</em> to each other for about three minutes, and then she reluctantly says, "OK. But this is really worth about seventy five dollars. You're really getting a great deal."<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I said, "Thanks!" and hit the road with my (French) crock and my two rubber stamps. I don't know if it really is worth anything, but it looks very pretty on my kitchen counter.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIYkTUmFxUQuOajrnTzt3RKr5BAum1rXVeoBeml9tYHMMRQ9VFJVKdbayv35H4KCS0G4ThTwWkS1PnbQub3uOKO5AnNmLX9IDNLA5a5qvg8QgxFjSvy_QlYmzhf6QDqc2qxwFY-BkOZDlE/s1600/DSC06109.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5637806620219746226" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIYkTUmFxUQuOajrnTzt3RKr5BAum1rXVeoBeml9tYHMMRQ9VFJVKdbayv35H4KCS0G4ThTwWkS1PnbQub3uOKO5AnNmLX9IDNLA5a5qvg8QgxFjSvy_QlYmzhf6QDqc2qxwFY-BkOZDlE/s200/DSC06109.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinlsNUbrQVvewiXxtbuOXvpdCHhE-myAWURYArJlOR75PMC3czbndfeAcDtvg2mJBDEfvAEoX34a9F3AB8UXL_ganyDf5s0lNIvUXVXjiXhCbTVy8OC9lxPWbhK-zSggtxiSQw2H0J9bS5/s1600/DSC06107.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5637806717620354338" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinlsNUbrQVvewiXxtbuOXvpdCHhE-myAWURYArJlOR75PMC3czbndfeAcDtvg2mJBDEfvAEoX34a9F3AB8UXL_ganyDf5s0lNIvUXVXjiXhCbTVy8OC9lxPWbhK-zSggtxiSQw2H0J9bS5/s200/DSC06107.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPPRKBGh05OM0dlFmL17Qezxk2pWtqs6VmMWS6Q9fKWHvw_bDx3Z5QvMFKiPf5NInVqI8b_tWodLtiG20CRjnhtZuFCvHqz0KwwKnA_BJRDoxdUJE_xebW6Iy3gSuiTB9N6nI2Nek8Ykm/s1600/DSC06113.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5637806517708319282" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPPRKBGh05OM0dlFmL17Qezxk2pWtqs6VmMWS6Q9fKWHvw_bDx3Z5QvMFKiPf5NInVqI8b_tWodLtiG20CRjnhtZuFCvHqz0KwwKnA_BJRDoxdUJE_xebW6Iy3gSuiTB9N6nI2Nek8Ykm/s200/DSC06113.JPG" /></a><br />I think the real deal was probably on the <em>stamps. </em>They still had price tags on them: $4.00 for the hummer, and $5.50 for "I really love to read!" Two teenage girls in pajamas told us, "There's more in the garage," but the garage was so packed full of junk we just had to laugh. Nutso.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>We went to a real, honest-to-God, estate sale today, the kind where you walk in through the house and <em>everything</em> is for sale. If you haven't ever seen a "Zoobook" you are missing out. My girls used to subscribe when they were little, and I've kept their old issues for use in my classroom for years. My kids have become Beanie snobs! They only choose ones that have their tags attached so that they can check on their "birthdays" and their names. For example, this pig's name is "Squealer" and his birthday is April 23, 1993. Don't ask me why, but they love this information. I have to be more careful when I buy them to make <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWBtfBAghb94SitpBVoTjmYAwZnipfmL75qGvb1YYD8smm31qOOhfDAVI7ADvAQ7O3rpbzqxjnpRLss9nfEaiKBmyzsxpDgdK-HABU6GajXP-NJv5hYft2f-4sJMiQcIl8y2E-l1fgYipS/s1600/DSC05808.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617435531678450002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWBtfBAghb94SitpBVoTjmYAwZnipfmL75qGvb1YYD8smm31qOOhfDAVI7ADvAQ7O3rpbzqxjnpRLss9nfEaiKBmyzsxpDgdK-HABU6GajXP-NJv5hYft2f-4sJMiQcIl8y2E-l1fgYipS/s200/DSC05808.JPG" /></a>sure they're intact. These two kitties have no tags...an oversight on my part! I also bought (yes, I know) more books for school, but these will probably be part of the "store" that I run on the last day, which is coming up this Thursday. My kids earn "<em>E</em>-tickets" (E for <em>Emery</em>, which is the name of our school, <em>Eagles</em>, our mascot). On the last day I "sell" all kinds of old stuff in exchange for unused E-tickets. It's very fun for them, they get books to take home for the summer, and I get rid of stuff like brand new stuffed animals that my mother-in-law often buys for me. (Don't ask.)</div><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Andy Warhol cat stationery, another little blank sketch book, racy but fun Taschen postcards: these will probably be "sock gifts" (Christmas stockings...big involved tradition in our family). Nobody has ever actually read it based on my recommendation, but I'm ever hopeful. I'm going to give this one to my friend Debbie. (I guess that means it's not really for me.) Matisse was an easy choice, but the <a href="http://www.hockneypictures.com/">David Hockney</a> book is a real find for $3. I might be his biggest fan. There were so many sales happening yesterday that we couldn't get to all of them. We picked up a few little goodies and then found something Carol's been searching for: a very nice leather couch. Unfortunately I don't have photos, (don't know how I missed that detail), but suffice to say that it was a screaming deal: a very soft, excellent condition "nutmeg" leather couch originally purchased at Macy's for $2500 for a deftly negotiated $300. We scurried over to Joe's shop to borrow a pick-up (not to mention $200 cash: good old Joe!)) and transported it off to its new home. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I found a lovely and elegant glass margarita pitcher with turquoise blue stripes around the base...really pretty. And then promptly broke it as soon as I walked in the house. Aaarrgh!<br /></div><br /><div>I picked up some travel books (London, Ireland, New England, San Francisco, New York!), not that I'm going anywhere, but a person can dream, right? I've got a passport! Also found like-new hardcover books for school, including <u>The Velveteen Rabbit. </u>Remember that one? Also something called <u>Country Ways and Wisdom</u> because it was pretty and looked interesting. </div><br /><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI1gWFwM0ghp07v2AqLft38JTjr9z-25mRKouA3Sa-Z7t5fZbGbL8vqHpE_6DYZlD6No2kr4P82CFgymNuuS6bUdbwToLoA1SvvnEIYWK8nSmuSzc-r5tl2abklJbOmWk8pzdal5qQEHSS/s1600/DSC05796.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614756601061516306" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI1gWFwM0ghp07v2AqLft38JTjr9z-25mRKouA3Sa-Z7t5fZbGbL8vqHpE_6DYZlD6No2kr4P82CFgymNuuS6bUdbwToLoA1SvvnEIYWK8nSmuSzc-r5tl2abklJbOmWk8pzdal5qQEHSS/s200/DSC05796.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div>I'm not sure why I bought these little shell-topped glass bottles, but I do have a thing for seashells and they're kind of pretty (and of course, cheap: $1 each). </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I found some brand new chili-pepper lights (actually "Luces en Forma de Chile") for $5 ...thinking of my brother, who is a big chili pepper fan. But then I found the margarita pitcher and thought, "Maybe we'll have a margarita party! Complete with chili pepper lights!" Then, as I said, I broke the pitcher.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Ps3L3KqrNhtGWrYxDwonxet5udD43ztUsr2RMX1C-0nHhym-9YU3_EqV5tlJmZO6yEx2TD_SKnBDYyDeWLYEJBp9UM5cK-jiakqmG4yG5yzag1x_El9H9VvS84WgXxIXORdhwFXmXaqa/s1600/DSC05791.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614756778168026226" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Ps3L3KqrNhtGWrYxDwonxet5udD43ztUsr2RMX1C-0nHhym-9YU3_EqV5tlJmZO6yEx2TD_SKnBDYyDeWLYEJBp9UM5cK-jiakqmG4yG5yzag1x_El9H9VvS84WgXxIXORdhwFXmXaqa/s200/DSC05791.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz99dKa1suzZo7BRNQMfv4Z-1amlE4wrb9g5Uz6KoxVc6u24Sh1X4w8w1Do2ADSfwzyOJgGXWYMrbCPGZjtWOVU2VaDxxqekI4OKCbjsK__Oj65rCMvrGhgSVDEaz_b-m5eylWK7VmmFdC/s1600/DSC05795.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 151px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614756496715556274" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz99dKa1suzZo7BRNQMfv4Z-1amlE4wrb9g5Uz6KoxVc6u24Sh1X4w8w1Do2ADSfwzyOJgGXWYMrbCPGZjtWOVU2VaDxxqekI4OKCbjsK__Oj65rCMvrGhgSVDEaz_b-m5eylWK7VmmFdC/s200/DSC05795.JPG" /></a><br /></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Also found a little black and white Parisian dish...cute in the black and white room. $1.<br /></div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXE0DvwR8YWBTNlLj98vTLEPz-X0r4NzNr0qUy8Y8Ul5_s2K5bAkmH37oHmzeBap1swATPulHFnGb39CrNdoTTDbja_iqdSi5JGIbmuy5mOUKiV1zIDcQztQGa4KjYRkTpqIn5Z5qx8jmr/s1600/DSC05794.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614756415492518514" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXE0DvwR8YWBTNlLj98vTLEPz-X0r4NzNr0qUy8Y8Ul5_s2K5bAkmH37oHmzeBap1swATPulHFnGb39CrNdoTTDbja_iqdSi5JGIbmuy5mOUKiV1zIDcQztQGa4KjYRkTpqIn5Z5qx8jmr/s200/DSC05794.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7UlJ6pCqtk8_q2mJymFzkjoVgiQI5mnU6gBdqWqWg7TPvQ9u5w_gK8dx1rLoozGKEwSSqtSiDjhDPCAoaI6UGN9tGufrQ9w_WAafdwP55-A4IaCIeDt6oZS0Ohrxr2mXdp_hdmnxXdCeY/s1600/DSC05797.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614755743134425874" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7UlJ6pCqtk8_q2mJymFzkjoVgiQI5mnU6gBdqWqWg7TPvQ9u5w_gK8dx1rLoozGKEwSSqtSiDjhDPCAoaI6UGN9tGufrQ9w_WAafdwP55-A4IaCIeDt6oZS0Ohrxr2mXdp_hdmnxXdCeY/s200/DSC05797.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div>Finally, my little sign..."Margaritaville". I saw this sign and said to myself, "That looks like my friend Nikki's work. Sure enough, I picked it up and there was her little sticker on the back. Nikki's children were in my kindergarten and first-grade classes about 13 years ago and we've been friends ever since our first parent-teacher conference. Nik said, "I know Natasha is fine. Let's talk about this diamond ring." (I was newly married to Joe back then.) She is a great fine artist, but has also been creatively crafty for years. Some of my favorite Christmas items were made by Nikki. So I happily paid $3 for the little Margaritaville sign...too bad I broke the pitcher to go with it. </div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Fortunately, you don't need a lovely pitcher to enjoy a margarita. We visit. We wander around gazing at gardens and finding ideas for plants and front porches. We wax rhapsodic over tiny little cottages and rail against the icky McMansions popping up in our neighborhood. (Although Emily has told me that I have to stop that. She says I have no business complaining about big houses.) Most days the garage sailing is incidental. So when we find great stuff like we did today, it's really just icing on the cake.</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div>You may recall past blogs about "The Jewelry Lady". We found her again today. The seller told me it was a $200 jacket (believable, since I bought Joe some Nike rain gear for Christmas which was pretty pricey), that he had only worn it <em>once</em> (also believable...I think it was just too small for the guy, who was pretty BIG), and that I could have it for $5. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrsA4LFkzl1MNMCPNPF0tQUpSMwYNLLnPVwl2XiTBzrmYCSISIJugOxL-SnhCD7TS0qSHpmQThUNhY-8fRWXf5Q9BK81t6JMkSVWgKQXX0Ot8Uu6sFouVo8PthYeFocqHmsxxmJSf2uEey/s1600/DSC05772.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5609601833929931954" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrsA4LFkzl1MNMCPNPF0tQUpSMwYNLLnPVwl2XiTBzrmYCSISIJugOxL-SnhCD7TS0qSHpmQThUNhY-8fRWXf5Q9BK81t6JMkSVWgKQXX0Ot8Uu6sFouVo8PthYeFocqHmsxxmJSf2uEey/s200/DSC05772.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNy89JIEINN19RYfMUhz9oKVa3fRSiWKvqpMa1mRREGHrTulVjcwmQ6IGSa1pcLZhsEmJT7f3JTd60VI7-YBNFMC5nZBxAkHVk3xEkxnQsjOOYky5xU7iQlzQ97UJgxljeMNR-A6_werpc/s1600/DSC05773.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5609601733935571074" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNy89JIEINN19RYfMUhz9oKVa3fRSiWKvqpMa1mRREGHrTulVjcwmQ6IGSa1pcLZhsEmJT7f3JTd60VI7-YBNFMC5nZBxAkHVk3xEkxnQsjOOYky5xU7iQlzQ97UJgxljeMNR-A6_werpc/s200/DSC05773.JPG" /></a> Sold.<br /><br /></div><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><div>Joe put it on (it fit perfectly), zipped it up in front of a full-length mirror and immediately did one of those invisible golf club swings that he's always doing. I steered clear of all those. Instead, it was a good day for replacing old icky stuff: Pyrex bakeware in much better condition (sparkly & new) than my old pieces; dish towels without stains or rips; coffee cups with no chips and just the right size; another nice big glass vase. My sister, Terry taught me this trick: buy vases at garage sales so that when you pick a bouquet for a friend, you can include the vase as part of the gift. Much classier (despite the name) than Classico spaghetti sauce jars, which is what I usually end up doing. </div><br /><br /><div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjozaRmI-OQRj1ChB1Q2D0zCNdAUfiSSPDZEW_AoVesKBmJ0y9ACFykwEAZs1gzqV4Dvn6RhWn1ndgegCvz_7m2zqRLWDgCFYZXT596PKhi0XtS5OP1xfGKt9_t9w8KRLr30gQ60im-NaMO/s1600/DSC05762.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606654222669564050" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjozaRmI-OQRj1ChB1Q2D0zCNdAUfiSSPDZEW_AoVesKBmJ0y9ACFykwEAZs1gzqV4Dvn6RhWn1ndgegCvz_7m2zqRLWDgCFYZXT596PKhi0XtS5OP1xfGKt9_t9w8KRLr30gQ60im-NaMO/s200/DSC05762.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxeo9o_DvOzshjqgu2Aa4snYUfaABxYQuMLtxspm7STrVB53EhL5GcCFuXYrDC7q6ZE6jm6q9X8tsWjWt23jDZcRph13zqhaxFyema3UveLglVwJ35-AadcD_aXDNIQZHISV5QNAvO0ltj/s1600/DSC05768.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606654432798006386" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxeo9o_DvOzshjqgu2Aa4snYUfaABxYQuMLtxspm7STrVB53EhL5GcCFuXYrDC7q6ZE6jm6q9X8tsWjWt23jDZcRph13zqhaxFyema3UveLglVwJ35-AadcD_aXDNIQZHISV5QNAvO0ltj/s200/DSC05768.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div>I also found these cute little tequila glasses. Personally, I try to stay away from tequila, (it makes me really stupid), but these and a bottle of Patron will make a nice presentito for somebody. And the little garden turtle gizmo for $1 was too cute to leave behind. </div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQjnTTxWWDRqJy7LMHLNa5SUeDQc51ExkrF1zluQR4Ba29pmQ5QRCbSTc9IrCtO_MNc6c-x_c9o6pcGcwn-2J_M9isUpSHEIENwKao_ybwm6DVGNWPBQXksHimZOdcetsPbp_jhRko9GVP/s1600/DSC05770.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606654319090430002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQjnTTxWWDRqJy7LMHLNa5SUeDQc51ExkrF1zluQR4Ba29pmQ5QRCbSTc9IrCtO_MNc6c-x_c9o6pcGcwn-2J_M9isUpSHEIENwKao_ybwm6DVGNWPBQXksHimZOdcetsPbp_jhRko9GVP/s200/DSC05770.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div>I bought this little set of books for a specific kid in my classroom. I worry about this one. He carries around big fat chapter books, but he can't read them. He <em>wants</em> to be able to, but he's just not there yet. These are shorter and more manageable, but still look like 8-year-old boy stuff. </div><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>The rest of this stuff didn't actually come from a garage sale, but a church rummage sale. Last year Emily & I went to what turns out to be an annual event at the local Presbyterian church. We went on the "preview" day, Thursday afternoon, and make out like bandits. Emily pretty much outfitted her entire kitchen, and I bought a beautiful red wool coat from Talbot's. So when Carol & I saw the signs last week we decided to do the "preview" again. Carol got there first and texted me: This place is a zoo. </div><br /><div>These Presbyterians know how to do a rummage sale. I've been to Catholic church sales and the Armenian Orthodox Christian sale (yes, who knew?), but the Presbyterians leave them in the dust. So I found Carol (she was easy to spot...she was wearing a top hat) and this time (knowing the drill from last year), I left her slogging through God knows what a<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtlLbQISWr8HJefwC-Zj7BSmNFLeKBhFoFx-6facV_ER5_ggdgkkCEaarJm8YOXHH48gawu_A1QxWCNMp3I3KDVT4fEwelh8Blb5yZHwnP2Ll_uZBL-TvDWHMiKRkq4AuUEy5EHwSVHwn6/s1600/DSC05767.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606654020108988370" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtlLbQISWr8HJefwC-Zj7BSmNFLeKBhFoFx-6facV_ER5_ggdgkkCEaarJm8YOXHH48gawu_A1QxWCNMp3I3KDVT4fEwelh8Blb5yZHwnP2Ll_uZBL-TvDWHMiKRkq4AuUEy5EHwSVHwn6/s200/DSC05767.JPG" /></a>nd headed straight to the "better" clothes section. Here are the things I bought: a black & white print shirt from Chico's, (I can hear Emily <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil4Mf-SKyuoP7GyCVd3f5qbIAp0NePyJkzl-PcpkKTaVaw9MLvWWVoQJpCuRoO_9gROOW8HvHa21sgm77eURxTnYJnF7CGMyGXg-Gk4oah6wDzDOr3LHs6JeC3ybsTj9zrtfO9oESLFSOX/s1600/DSC05766.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606654113645375746" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil4Mf-SKyuoP7GyCVd3f5qbIAp0NePyJkzl-PcpkKTaVaw9MLvWWVoQJpCuRoO_9gROOW8HvHa21sgm77eURxTnYJnF7CGMyGXg-Gk4oah6wDzDOr3LHs6JeC3ybsTj9zrtfO9oESLFSOX/s200/DSC05766.JPG" /></a>snickering about that one, but hey...I'm 57), a long elegant green t-shirt from Eileen Fisher, a lightweight cardigan from J. Every house we went to had at least one seashell-related item. We saw candles shaped like conch shells, pillows with seashell motifs, crystal scallop shell dishes, little framed paintings of sea shells, and a big bag full of actual seashells...which we bought for $5 and then divvied up when we got home. Carol even bought a big glass jar to keep some in. I will probably put mine in the famous Estimate Jar. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidR5FwqNaz98Nn0EvtkJ1_8wtx-D7OSkvg8qTYKQ5p3zD6YAX2J-dwjt5Xf8jL7gvhqebscyYKTdk7yORwh1pSVrCloFUoX2kOnGvXheisUu1ueOYW6YT2OXhtEa_v1E-F6B0OA-bfjrAB/s1600/DSC05680.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604142586172306722" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidR5FwqNaz98Nn0EvtkJ1_8wtx-D7OSkvg8qTYKQ5p3zD6YAX2J-dwjt5Xf8jL7gvhqebscyYKTdk7yORwh1pSVrCloFUoX2kOnGvXheisUu1ueOYW6YT2OXhtEa_v1E-F6B0OA-bfjrAB/s200/DSC05680.JPG" /></a></div><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV8fPetsFw_x5XUydM7nFmzrFrPY0aJ3FhEDyN70OiwyJoRUf1z37PMihygYtNtLFVQgPPmrwUoYDMOLgx1twGiKicWnhZBmh6GaiiD0yXF9FSt8JVRFhqNB302YRCkJl45cguFNdMNegc/s1600/DSC05683.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604142402708619858" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV8fPetsFw_x5XUydM7nFmzrFrPY0aJ3FhEDyN70OiwyJoRUf1z37PMihygYtNtLFVQgPPmrwUoYDMOLgx1twGiKicWnhZBmh6GaiiD0yXF9FSt8JVRFhqNB302YRCkJl45cguFNdMNegc/s200/DSC05683.JPG" /></a> <br /><div>Here is the rest of Carol's haul: a rug for outside her patio door, a lovely hanging hurricane candle holder, a big beautiful turquoise pot that a silver agave will soon be moving into, a set of yellow chicken plates, not to mention a big ceramic chicken...and various and sundry other little <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">doo</span>-dads including My Fair Lady just because she hadn't seen it in forever. I think she spent about $23. </div><br /><br />Most of this stuff came from our first stop: a lovely house tucked way down at the end of a long hidden driveway. The woman clearly doted on her teenage daughter, Courtney<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm7ftlDSlgFBP5Z6Qs67t0J3P1wp3PmAy6o1wVPug-dc9zTsQ_739MMEzFfF-gSJLUzK1FUvDuSwb_Uc1jYpp66zcKCxkjeirWG27eooPrnLhfUNn2sBkoaFYyJeXTKs5o3TqsSzx0Aii8/s1600/DSC05684.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604142281553452354" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm7ftlDSlgFBP5Z6Qs67t0J3P1wp3PmAy6o1wVPug-dc9zTsQ_739MMEzFfF-gSJLUzK1FUvDuSwb_Uc1jYpp66zcKCxkjeirWG27eooPrnLhfUNn2sBkoaFYyJeXTKs5o3TqsSzx0Aii8/s200/DSC05684.JPG" /></a>, whose name was emblazoned on many items now lying around on the driveway for sale. Courtney, it seems, isn't happy with her current high school situation, (private), and doesn't like the (public) option in her own neighborhood...the neighborhood where her mom has happily lived for twenty years. So they're selling everything to move to the neighborhood that Courtney (I'm guessing she's about 15...the extremely icky years) prefers. I would not know any of this, by the way, if Carol was not with me. In any case, for reasons we did <em>not</em> discover, this woman had boxes of brand new <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Topsider</span> deck shoes, <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Teva</span> sandals, all kinds of brand new women's stuff that was too overwhelming to even pick through, and neatly folded brand new men's shirts for $5. I found a nice Columbia one for Joe. (The t-shirt is just a good gardening shirt from a later sale. )<br /><br /><div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJBJtb2oQcdpP82HbEO3VE3b_Vn9U2vC0AeHYafIQ2WGlLsJBO3WbUz2Re_Gn-BWYjO38zmXarNkNWxdn299E2gtWCqo2OjFj_6X39gK_oyhRKOnHM_G43QyASDLQUDAF4c20YDHviqR5f/s1600/DSC05686.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604142053983044274" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJBJtb2oQcdpP82HbEO3VE3b_Vn9U2vC0AeHYafIQ2WGlLsJBO3WbUz2Re_Gn-BWYjO38zmXarNkNWxdn299E2gtWCqo2OjFj_6X39gK_oyhRKOnHM_G43QyASDLQUDAF4c20YDHviqR5f/s200/DSC05686.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div>I bought more books. Next year it looks like I will have at least 35 students, and I am <em>already</em> short when it comes to dictionaries and copies of <u>Charlotte's Web.</u> And bird stickers...too perfect to pass up! The Dickens' Christmas books are probably going to be gifts. Lovely copies, both of them. (And by the way, you may want to read <u>A Christmas Carol</u> again...it's funnier than you might remember!) I also found this beautiful book of Georgia <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">O'Keeffe's</span> flower paintings for $8. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">Oooooohhh</span>. </div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRi8VXkwik-hjbI8K2zIR3xV0ELD67gIlTfcVcAi9wIoTjsqMXhvVGEztpwOQhORO8qQXJ8ZQyJQkxAOBN857DYwPDKDQlnmjY2pTYAqZT3ONTdiJxTP9uXaD-AzgR8bXOfl1UtKCaCDDr/s1600/DSC05685.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604141692959129730" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRi8VXkwik-hjbI8K2zIR3xV0ELD67gIlTfcVcAi9wIoTjsqMXhvVGEztpwOQhORO8qQXJ8ZQyJQkxAOBN857DYwPDKDQlnmjY2pTYAqZT3ONTdiJxTP9uXaD-AzgR8bXOfl1UtKCaCDDr/s200/DSC05685.JPG" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUXwyaS0ex4PztAomSsFRnpHmqrKL4ODaNjbkrQDDzV8vHwfGCkzKrv14lG1bT6qkOWqZvs-Va3seiB7Ry3TZWanJ9V1C2SRiXa6MVwY5hx32oEwyQ2BchgjczV9stfYEWyQoGKsvqGX4S/s1600/DSC05682.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604142161174960834" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUXwyaS0ex4PztAomSsFRnpHmqrKL4ODaNjbkrQDDzV8vHwfGCkzKrv14lG1bT6qkOWqZvs-Va3seiB7Ry3TZWanJ9V1C2SRiXa6MVwY5hx32oEwyQ2BchgjczV9stfYEWyQoGKsvqGX4S/s200/DSC05682.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div>More chairs! I spent a little time in Arizona, visiting Emily in Tucson, and picking up my mom in Prescott. I've been working on bird projects with two groups of third-graders all month: 75 different bird projects that needed resources, organization, writing instruction, proofreading, etc. Then there was Easter, which is always a big deal at our house. This year was no exception: 39 people and 5 dogs (and it was raining!). Then I got sick!</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>April <em>is</em> the cruelest month, it turns out.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XmTqG0HOHuYBKqEq7AOImu-u6FVG-JB20giHWRhKIiSUjNs8cBYi6tfQzzHhX0qKIZfyb3CRsvMWyJb66FhLWECJXq3Yy7R8wZsvOW9XL6-DC02KcH03omvSwvwBvHz3gMLEBoMzgSgd/s1600/purple+chair.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601496442423192002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XmTqG0HOHuYBKqEq7AOImu-u6FVG-JB20giHWRhKIiSUjNs8cBYi6tfQzzHhX0qKIZfyb3CRsvMWyJb66FhLWECJXq3Yy7R8wZsvOW9XL6-DC02KcH03omvSwvwBvHz3gMLEBoMzgSgd/s200/purple+chair.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div>Anyway...all this stuff has been cutting into my saling time. Today, the last day of April, coincides with the annual <a href="http://www.heardsgardentour.com/">Mary Lou Heard garden tour</a>. This is an annual event for Carol & me. Before we hit the tour we managed to scrape up one interesting goodie: an aluminum chair (at least I think it's aluminum). I think it will be fun in my garden, but only if it's in the shade...wouldn't want to cause any second-degree burns. I like it! $20.</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSXalGhiEsNzIiPahIpNNA_Y5HzvXzA4nbHH_wB51u6a7tU30E4r9xwBQkumdsKiSDFdLBBU2b8DBEoewMYih9J8g-FegWEKTryNiewYCruWlkpjKpm8NL0w4gDWF6Bxm_skDQIaeuXKZA/s1600/hb+garden+idea+1c.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601497934208212802" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSXalGhiEsNzIiPahIpNNA_Y5HzvXzA4nbHH_wB51u6a7tU30E4r9xwBQkumdsKiSDFdLBBU2b8DBEoewMYih9J8g-FegWEKTryNiewYCruWlkpjKpm8NL0w4gDWF6Bxm_skDQIaeuXKZA/s200/hb+garden+idea+1c.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div>Here are a few shots from the garden tour. Most of these people have all kinds of little goodies that they've scraped up at yard sales and flea markets tucked away in their amazing gardens. (I'm going to be on the lookout for a <em>moon gazing pond</em>...see the little one with the frog?) Inspiring, but also somewhat disheartening. These gardens are full-time jobs, and unfortunately, I already have one of those. Someday I look forward to full-time puttering.</div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTWf_byuahWfTwmcKCaHSWcuPoAjvaXjTmCFsQ2lMMP3XByP-u7CkujqrIRLPpcQrqFOPOWvD-9R-DY-zQU9Ohuuw3dRHBxAvIWitG7B7MqhdsWVYcsUWYJIAWlNuxNZmcj64LmNmwG4m-/s1600/cm+garden+1i.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601498067325068130" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTWf_byuahWfTwmcKCaHSWcuPoAjvaXjTmCFsQ2lMMP3XByP-u7CkujqrIRLPpcQrqFOPOWvD-9R-DY-zQU9Ohuuw3dRHBxAvIWitG7B7MqhdsWVYcsUWYJIAWlNuxNZmcj64LmNmwG4m-/s200/cm+garden+1i.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT4a6pCij0SWf_Q91PzCO5A5k_fHw4AJUTjhA52jkXH3kw27WQ4pYgWYcXo69-ILHjuorvdcG3AK3kOvXA_EWGZUnGjyE2TgYmAG8ZkoguLCH5-x0zIU6opWEWtk0O4PMZDAlYocVA38cq/s1600/cm+garden+1d.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601497623688501298" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT4a6pCij0SWf_Q91PzCO5A5k_fHw4AJUTjhA52jkXH3kw27WQ4pYgWYcXo69-ILHjuorvdcG3AK3kOvXA_EWGZUnGjyE2TgYmAG8ZkoguLCH5-x0zIU6opWEWtk0O4PMZDAlYocVA38cq/s200/cm+garden+1d.jpg" /></a> <br /><div>How's <em>your</em> April going?<br /></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div>Garage Sailinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13704965611774307215noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586100350236217689.post-31974375711254546332011-04-03T10:46:00.000-07:002011-04-03T11:20:11.828-07:00Malicious Skippers<div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikFZUz8kRcKj5gW4tqICfVdxCQERrW-BGQpuXxCY0q3RV-WtElhhNSf3PuMMsIWTU3IXDCJmi8vvm-u0Bf5TPf31WS0q8VPOX4tsmHW2QibQ0Vbvfp8S88531X0j5GLym6WXQgjFtneIfJ/s1600/al+the+bikeman.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591421189102186946" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikFZUz8kRcKj5gW4tqICfVdxCQERrW-BGQpuXxCY0q3RV-WtElhhNSf3PuMMsIWTU3IXDCJmi8vvm-u0Bf5TPf31WS0q8VPOX4tsmHW2QibQ0Vbvfp8S88531X0j5GLym6WXQgjFtneIfJ/s200/al+the+bikeman.jpg" /></a> <br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSb-rC7kqmPs8Y7okG6IiWNDsfWg5d3ySOIoMm1tsYwrZ3OP9i_2hr-dC8SvQVr6lg4fUj-RdI62li0Nzsy97zb1xWqlraXtG7VSp5VjrRRcnrTwRykjm2MlRTSVtRPZ6uGWuSlna1E8cW/s1600/DSC05540.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591421390570944610" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSb-rC7kqmPs8Y7okG6IiWNDsfWg5d3ySOIoMm1tsYwrZ3OP9i_2hr-dC8SvQVr6lg4fUj-RdI62li0Nzsy97zb1xWqlraXtG7VSp5VjrRRcnrTwRykjm2MlRTSVtRPZ6uGWuSlna1E8cW/s200/DSC05540.JPG" /></a> <br /><div><br /><div><br /><div>There was not much activity this weekend, so this will be a short post. Carol did find a pretty good bike for $10. Her sweetie, Al, has started repairing bikes to donate to children. Here's the $10 find (complete with bell!) and the repairman himself in his shop. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I found another good hat. (Summer's coming). Several boxes of thank-you cards. The woman said, "No one writes any more." And a bunch of <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijMDVqLfAIA5py21QXoBBWeXVbd5F1SjZihzEJEyRneXxdzJdYek8bFKVOTzczV-QjBPhsshEeoLFm8sK2koCacz4Ywf4rQdlhWG3iFdmRncldsXVw4746WD1379oQr0B_7PuPbOSfe0VR/s1600/DSC05541.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591420417326294978" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijMDVqLfAIA5py21QXoBBWeXVbd5F1SjZihzEJEyRneXxdzJdYek8bFKVOTzczV-QjBPhsshEeoLFm8sK2koCacz4Ywf4rQdlhWG3iFdmRncldsXVw4746WD1379oQr0B_7PuPbOSfe0VR/s200/DSC05541.JPG" /></a>books. This woman was clearly searching for something: she had books on every major religion, poetry anthologies, essays, and books of prayers. I was inspired to do a <em>small </em>bit of searching myself. So these are what I bought. However, the only one I've even spent any time at all with is the <a href="http://www.acornnaturalists.com/store/National-Audubon-Society-Field-Guides-C194.aspx">National Audobon Society </a>Field Guide to North American Butterflies. (Look! They're $19.95 new!) I thought I already had every <a href="http://garagesalingweeklytreasurehunts.blogspot.com/2010/09/every-cloud-has-silver-lining.html">field guide </a>they've ever produced, but no! Here's what I've learned so far: there is an entire class of butterflies called <em>Fritillaries. </em>There are <em>Coppers, Blues, Elfins</em>, <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq7raX4a3-p3CAOLZAJspRQsYfZpxNffZ_bD-c7Swpt6WA1qkdFnmOwe-zWyyiJwY5BSvltJvkM-ZT-Z1RY5guqZ-cklTsflt2H5FyALPSAWRGmp_sv8HXvFvPeTb6mu3rJB-IH3XnWNEk/s1600/DSC05542.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591420309211370146" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq7raX4a3-p3CAOLZAJspRQsYfZpxNffZ_bD-c7Swpt6WA1qkdFnmOwe-zWyyiJwY5BSvltJvkM-ZT-Z1RY5guqZ-cklTsflt2H5FyALPSAWRGmp_sv8HXvFvPeTb6mu3rJB-IH3XnWNEk/s200/DSC05542.JPG" /></a><em>Sulphurs, </em>and<em> Hairstreaks</em>. Aren't they great names? And then there are the <em>Skippers, </em>including the <em>Malicious Skipper </em>which frankly, sounds a little oxymoronic to me. There's nothing terribly malicious in the description. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Anyway...I spent a total of $6. Now I'm going to put on my hat and go outside to read.</div></div></div></div></div>Garage Sailinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13704965611774307215noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586100350236217689.post-70611717687409161482011-03-26T11:11:00.000-07:002011-03-26T11:53:51.554-07:00Excellent finds<div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div>Carol has asked me to post photos of her excellent finds this morning. At first glance, she immediately started pointing out places where she had lived and gone to school. I convinced her she had to have it: $15. A couple garden goodies; sturdy tools & little planter: $2. A pretty little magazine rack and a Williams Sonoma pasta sauce book: I'm not sure about this. I think the book was free and the rack was $3. A sweet little pine dresser for $25 which is going in her guest room. This is going to become my new fantasy. </div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Then we met another lovely woman (a landscape designer, golfer, & volunteer for Meals on Wheels), also down-sizing, who was selling beautiful things that had <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1YM9pocii3n_7cGxTl5vBAbusOXvT05VPJ6Zc753MEsGaaYf1TkelCQelYMv6SKeBCx0eBTRedRubsBX4Ze9sEpdfbOfN5wEhvoEKhbGOnhJ3DDOcXFMsFo7Pv5DYEFXyEzZzXGuCckCp/s1600/DSC05437.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588460310920851250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1YM9pocii3n_7cGxTl5vBAbusOXvT05VPJ6Zc753MEsGaaYf1TkelCQelYMv6SKeBCx0eBTRedRubsBX4Ze9sEpdfbOfN5wEhvoEKhbGOnhJ3DDOcXFMsFo7Pv5DYEFXyEzZzXGuCckCp/s200/DSC05437.JPG" /></a>belonged to her mother. The pine dresser & magazine rack came from her house. I bought these three beautiful etchings for $75. The photos don't do them justice. The smallest one is Salzburg. I'm not sure about the other two. The woman got tears in her eyes when I carried them away. I told her I'd take good care of them. Rain was forecast. Also, after digging, planting, and dragging pots around the back yard last weekend, I had wrenched my back pretty good. But good old Carol was here at 7:30, the sun was (sort of) shining, and we went out anyway.</div><div></div><div> </div><div>Here are the finds:</div><div></div><div>A fish plate: $1. I love this fish. I'm going to hang it up, I think. I have another deeper blue fish plate it will look nice with. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4j5p8Hjuc-MLQqHXWQmkbswh9znujx5Zic8-Jrw0ePNz0V9pFRvIN0BTnhmifrKvcFFRS_rbqBilTIaG5PSZ5OY72HgzazG5T4hLZzqnXCR3Qf8MWNPGW0xRiDFYzzflKfynZjAu77XID/s1600/DSC05422.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585873702591754226" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4j5p8Hjuc-MLQqHXWQmkbswh9znujx5Zic8-Jrw0ePNz0V9pFRvIN0BTnhmifrKvcFFRS_rbqBilTIaG5PSZ5OY72HgzazG5T4hLZzqnXCR3Qf8MWNPGW0xRiDFYzzflKfynZjAu77XID/s200/DSC05422.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div></div><div>Blue bowl, tray, and basket: $1. Then when I went to pay for it, the guy said, "Oh, here's the pot that goes with it." Now I'm not sure if they're bowls, pie plates, pots or what. Pretty, though.</div><br /><br /><br /><div></div><div>Another little goofy cement thing for succulents. I have a pretty big yard with lots of corners to stick things into. The Beanies inside it were a gift from Carol, who is on a mission to clear things out of her garage. Ooohhh! Lots of new prizes for next year's math students! The basket is way better than the funky paper sack I have them in now, I must admit.</div><br /><br /><div></div><div>A brand new set of Mexican train dominoes. I have the gardening bug. And now that it will be lighter at the end of the day, there's more time to putz outside. So I was on the lookout for garden goodies.<br /><br /><br />Here's what I found:<br /><br /><br />Adirondack chairs. Complete with table & cushions. For sale from a lovely Irishma<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE5U7YVeMi9bS9FOkiI5GC5c8Ni7yv7FjkZ5Js_IJFM5ZSs7yPWSKqFt-J8XuHtaYeaHZY5QRbLC5wV9Ylb9sqGLs7LRlx-WtUT0417fUYn2dhr9CVMO2dkqDU2Tp95xuticqF3Zq0Gag-/s1600/DSC05413.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583697959817793426" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE5U7YVeMi9bS9FOkiI5GC5c8Ni7yv7FjkZ5Js_IJFM5ZSs7yPWSKqFt-J8XuHtaYeaHZY5QRbLC5wV9Ylb9sqGLs7LRlx-WtUT0417fUYn2dhr9CVMO2dkqDU2Tp95xuticqF3Zq0Gag-/s200/DSC05413.JPG" /></a>n who insisted that we girls (Carol & I) were not goin' home without these chairs. He said, "Look. We've distressed them quite nicely for you. Took years to get them this way." Maybe it was the accent. In any case the chairs did, indeed, come home with me. $40 for the set. I replaced an old, funky glass table that was sitting on the porch and Carol took the four little chairs that were out there to give to her daughter, Ana. I'm trying not to bring in anything new unless something old goes away!<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMOnxO3uTv2AUtuTZiz2He1i3Lt3Ce9dCgzVREkKdwaskghdz20UmTmwD0AzLb4ppBkfMPXdZRgTh0kRyPirI8U-bv6lUugrsnBL1JNxgQlMhmzPh_teyhZqq41_dPlB2R9LSGyZWOjSCT/s1600/DSC05414.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583697878889040018" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMOnxO3uTv2AUtuTZiz2He1i3Lt3Ce9dCgzVREkKdwaskghdz20UmTmwD0AzLb4ppBkfMPXdZRgTh0kRyPirI8U-bv6lUugrsnBL1JNxgQlMhmzPh_teyhZqq41_dPlB2R9LSGyZWOjSCT/s200/DSC05414.JPG" /></a><br />Three lovely iron wall planters & one Italian pot. $11. At first the guy said, "These came from <a href="http://www.rogersgardens.com/">Roger's Gardens </a>(famously gorgeous and pricey nursery here in Newport). How about $30 for all three?" I made a face. That was pretty much all it took. $10 for the three, and a buck for the clay pot. Here are the before & after shots. I just dug some stuff up out of the yard and stuck it in there. We'll see how it does.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1nZWM3h8pXZRPVFF6tdan-dnWlbMFQN-UGoTgCLxhGBv8CghXhG1yArEG7x_qR3QhKMnkqtSZ3ifjW1pAeuxwR7GxnPe0ZcDjVWQoIlpY4H26PxINNG3GnFdZfKpDYkqG9cUS22SRxqba/s1600/DSC05419.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583697695554562898" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1nZWM3h8pXZRPVFF6tdan-dnWlbMFQN-UGoTgCLxhGBv8CghXhG1yArEG7x_qR3QhKMnkqtSZ3ifjW1pAeuxwR7GxnPe0ZcDjVWQoIlpY4H26PxINNG3GnFdZfKpDYkqG9cUS22SRxqba/s200/DSC05419.JPG" /></a><br />This photo is funny because everything in it came from a garage sale. Hidden in the background is a little cement Sleepy (from Snow White) who was here when I moved in. I didn't really understand what he was doing here before, but these day his yawning presence pretty much sums it up. In fact, after all this garden putzing and a cold Stella, I was feeling exactly like this little guy.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT-MBL4MK0FQQCr9Na0eFlw74-JQJBrcgrXDNL8qcYv9AMXHaQ5HFJjZmUU1DAw951DHDDdVwgqTtha2xIVt7wSnsfetGYMbTckRKM7sPYTVu3QOOl7GASg5l68BMJYsnP3Vu3k0l5126S/s1600/DSC05417.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583697780380851922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT-MBL4MK0FQQCr9Na0eFlw74-JQJBrcgrXDNL8qcYv9AMXHaQ5HFJjZmUU1DAw951DHDDdVwgqTtha2xIVt7wSnsfetGYMbTckRKM7sPYTVu3QOOl7GASg5l68BMJYsnP3Vu3k0l5126S/s200/DSC05417.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaxdG2QNTz5trffT_-kpmZNu3mfNZmL6E74A7SDDJpp2L5zdwvB-TJYBlOFxEbkvd3DCMjpdvVEDjDizcYidpa79U8H_O4inxpJELCL0g-sffXJqcBNd6CkdN6UpP1RMCjanKGav8H3CMa/s1600/DSC05420.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583697596177510018" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaxdG2QNTz5trffT_-kpmZNu3mfNZmL6E74A7SDDJpp2L5zdwvB-TJYBlOFxEbkvd3DCMjpdvVEDjDizcYidpa79U8H_O4inxpJELCL0g-sffXJqcBNd6CkdN6UpP1RMCjanKGav8H3CMa/s200/DSC05420.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />An artist's <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQZCZmbe-U4fTXE20sx77TRHjw7K1rSrxjOCloaaSuc-0g9soPgGgkfwf6DJwXjI0d_v5kgqtBrgHes5tGgEHcK7zp2nswyTz1M9iKzsWgrge73N6zJ-JLNEdv2P87G_67XZIDoS6dVHOo/s1600/DSC05415.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583697483760479538" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQZCZmbe-U4fTXE20sx77TRHjw7K1rSrxjOCloaaSuc-0g9soPgGgkfwf6DJwXjI0d_v5kgqtBrgHes5tGgEHcK7zp2nswyTz1M9iKzsWgrge73N6zJ-JLNEdv2P87G_67XZIDoS6dVHOo/s200/DSC05415.JPG" /></a>chair. For sale from a sweet old lady who was also selling many water colors. At first I thought I'd really use it for drawing (I mean, my iPad can even fit in that zipper pocket). But when I got home I dragged it out in the garden (as you can see from the potting soil all around it) and it worked perfectly. $5.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzdZxCH-7jWRfw0JcPTi18cb_PMf4WDgFN34tLKAD-GZ5-0g4pfAx0BmuLLeXz7tGd9airk1NvHplW84ogVQgPMPedtWHMLjHLZUTzA1fOPhjCMVZ0ya_VUi4uGt1SHl31mHU1z8bVW0bg/s1600/BoulangerAltamar.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 137px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583696803138157282" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzdZxCH-7jWRfw0JcPTi18cb_PMf4WDgFN34tLKAD-GZ5-0g4pfAx0BmuLLeXz7tGd9airk1NvHplW84ogVQgPMPedtWHMLjHLZUTzA1fOPhjCMVZ0ya_VUi4uGt1SHl31mHU1z8bVW0bg/s200/BoulangerAltamar.jpg" /></a><br />One funny side note. Remember this stuff? Those round-faced children wearing brightly colored clothes and happily riding bikes or playing tunes or whatever? We saw what appeared to be knock-offs of them for sale at the first place we stopped. Then we went around the corner and there were a few more of them (the exact same knock-offs) dragged out on the driveway. Unbelievable.<br /><br /><br />And, since it's a gardening post, here is the little pot I bought a <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimtYw_VPrqHjTYuaVcHcArqgOsTI5HynZHPh-TcoAvT6hHsPIhIW6ho8QKinssnJ-eRT5iKDkbbVlLd0q20fHvffIrfngKgNLKuR5aK7ok5woFXRGlFqRnt-SlhSC8gRZKFfX5fo-s05hT/s1600/DSC05416.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583698351903669090" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimtYw_VPrqHjTYuaVcHcArqgOsTI5HynZHPh-TcoAvT6hHsPIhIW6ho8QKinssnJ-eRT5iKDkbbVlLd0q20fHvffIrfngKgNLKuR5aK7ok5woFXRGlFqRnt-SlhSC8gRZKFfX5fo-s05hT/s200/DSC05416.JPG" /></a>few weeks ago. Like the other ones, I filled it with cuttings from stuff in the yard. Now I just hope for survival!<br /><br />Hope you get to be outside!Garage Sailinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13704965611774307215noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586100350236217689.post-52058844888718788282011-03-05T14:33:00.000-08:002023-01-02T17:18:07.912-08:00Dollar DaysCarol & I were back at it this morning after two rainy Saturdays. There were so many sales today that we couldn't make it to all of them. It was a day of DVD's, kids' games, and many kitchen gadgets. Carol found the microwave oven (for her daughter) that was on her list. And the one thing I really needed, a little "lift" for my new LCD player on my school computer (you know the kind: sort of an open rack for stacking things in cupboards) was sitting on the driveway at our very first sale. I love it when that happens.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyZac0oj109Jobvy37gf7eJbB5SiKXMn6S6LwgX88yWPHbQGA_6wR0K70MAPkFGX93Sqxh9nN_X_daGG13Fxq3c29jOEfFWjZVIouvPW7gmWKmTxceHXQ7GhTowpjaRoyXsTNTweDHxjJy/s1600/DSC05406.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580730647472544130" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyZac0oj109Jobvy37gf7eJbB5SiKXMn6S6LwgX88yWPHbQGA_6wR0K70MAPkFGX93Sqxh9nN_X_daGG13Fxq3c29jOEfFWjZVIouvPW7gmWKmTxceHXQ7GhTowpjaRoyXsTNTweDHxjJy/s200/DSC05406.JPG" style="cursor: hand; float: right; height: 150px; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; width: 200px;" /></a> I also bought a really nice copy of one of my favorite books: <em>The Mayor of Casterbridge </em>by Thomas Hardy. (Possibly the best opening chapter ever written.) I was just recommending it to a friend of mine last week. Now I have a copy to give her.

<em>Everything</em> cost $1 today. The aforementioned rack: $1. Book: $1. Two little bottle green candlesticks (I know...what do I need more candlesticks for? But how can I resist my favorite color? At this price I can give some of my others away): $1. A "Toes on the Nose" hoodie for chilly <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdFjirIOGqpVH6Gy0YnqqFU7j-AqHb2bid7UstOd5g742x_Mm13gY8vZhoeZbNou5UFxvu0uHIW7N6uXHtzKCBZs0_ovju1vHIO5FW3q_ZlHyPU7hlzatz256D2Werz0BiPvtKz1I4dZoW/s1600/DSC05411.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580730475060838850" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdFjirIOGqpVH6Gy0YnqqFU7j-AqHb2bid7UstOd5g742x_Mm13gY8vZhoeZbNou5UFxvu0uHIW7N6uXHtzKCBZs0_ovju1vHIO5FW3q_ZlHyPU7hlzatz256D2Werz0BiPvtKz1I4dZoW/s200/DSC05411.JPG" style="cursor: hand; float: right; height: 200px; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; width: 150px;" /></a>weekends: $1. Another lamp (yes, I can hear you, "Another lamp?" But look how cute!): $1. A way nicer enameled white colander than the one I am currently using: $1.
Two pretty, red mosaic picture frames, brand new: $1. (The original price tag is still on the 4x6 box: $19.99. Remember what I told you about <em>never</em> buying new picture frames?) And finally, tiny and adorable shamrock cups: 4 for $1. St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner, what can I say. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiG6nD5RbJqxRiu20B0x6e-Emdic4QCPzagNgavX7uXw8V4yY7hDAtGq3omZIdgOmisYAIMLoDktxi3yW6fJAhdPqDbZALtcwLCdNIprgA2SlW7GA8474_SQpXNlkfr2N_LKSRF2qCoiyL/s1600/DSC05410.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580730348195357634" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiG6nD5RbJqxRiu20B0x6e-Emdic4QCPzagNgavX7uXw8V4yY7hDAtGq3omZIdgOmisYAIMLoDktxi3yW6fJAhdPqDbZALtcwLCdNIprgA2SlW7GA8474_SQpXNlkfr2N_LKSRF2qCoiyL/s200/DSC05410.JPG" style="cursor: hand; float: right; height: 150px; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; width: 200px;" /></a>Garage Sailinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13704965611774307215noreply@blogger.com1
